Our Kids’ Future

This weekend my family and I were able to getaway. We went somewhere where we were able to take long walks and get outside. It was something our thirteen-year-old son needed.

I’m writing this while our nation is starting to open up after the global lockdown due to the virus called COVID 19. We shut down most of our economy for over two months because we were afraid that millions of people would die. We didn’t know much about this virus when we first got into it, except that it targeted mostly older people. So we shut down the entire community, even our schools.

Motherhood – Constant Transformation

As mothers – really as women – we are continually going through transformations. Much more so than men. And I feel we benefit from it. Yes, our bodies monthly, for a large percentage of our lives, cycle through changes, but we have other changes too.

The Genius Paradigm and PROTAG

The 6 Characteristics that Will Help You Live and Share Your Genius I started this journey of looking at genius by researching what those that society has already recognize as geniuses say about it. I wanted to find out what characteristics they thought were important. I looked at quotes from Einstein, Edison, and Michelangelo. But … Read more

Adding Structure to Life During Trying Times

I’ve been looking forward to next week. We were supposed to go to the Grand Canyon during Spring Break. Now it just seems like another week at home. Doing the same thing we’ve been doing for the last several weeks. The days are running into each other. Nothing changes. I need to jump-start my days and start keeping myself accountable. A Hero’s Journey or Path to Mediocrity?

The Importance of the Journey

THE HERO’S JOURNEY

Joseph Campbell’s book, “Hero with a Thousand Faces,” sets up a system that many stories follow. The protagonist:
1. gets a call to adventure,
2. has a mentor appear to help him,
3. leaves the known for the unknown,
4. suffers through tests/trials/traps/temptations,
5. suffers through a crisis,
6. is reborn,
7. gets the treasure (or result they are looking for),
8. and return to the known world to their old life but in an upgraded form, where they are ready for the next adventure.
(TEDed has a great video titled, “What makes a Hero?” by Matthew Winkler)

Changing Traditions

Changing Traditions by Heidi Christianson

I have five sons; four of them are adults.  This year two of them had to work Christmas day.  They live in Texas and couldn’t get here until the Friday after Christmas.  I decided to completely postpone our Christmas so that we could all be together.  Those of us at home just enjoyed a quiet day while the rest of the world celebrated.  We went to the movies and had a nice meal but that was it.  But we kept our traditions; we just postponed them.

The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews

The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters by Andy Andrews

This little book has changed my life!  I have purchased over a dozen of them and given them away.  I want everyone to have it.

My family and I have been following the Leadership Education homeschool philosophy for over 12 years.  When I was first introduced to it by reading Oliver DeMille’s book Thomas Jefferson Education, I was immediately drawn to it.  With a quote –
