I’m a history teacher. I LOVE history, especially exploring the cycles in history. I get excited when I see how things like entrepreneurship have changed the world. Consider how peasants participated in the cottage industry. Or how about the industrial revolution! And when we get to America, wow! The entrepreneurial spirit created our country!
Many people today are concerned about what is going on in the world. They see a downward spiral in many aspects of our life. I have family members who rail on about politics, business, and life in general. Many of those things they have no control over. They don’t realize that one thing they do have control over is the one thing that can make their life better and, in the process, make a huge difference in the world.
Entrepreneurship. “What?” You say. “Having your own business is for greedy business owners that only take advantage of their customers! I don’t want to do that!” Well, I’m here to say, “Yes. You do.”
Entrepreneurship comes in many forms. It could be a service industry or selling a product. It may be providing home rentals. Whatever it is, it could also be a way for you to share your genius.
When you share your genius you aren’t taking advantage of anyone. You are sharing your gifts with the world. You need to have morals but you also don’t have to give your gifts away. It is perfectly moral to have compensation for your time and efforts.
As a moral entrepreneur, it is all about serving others. You are meeting the needs of your customers. How can this be wrong? When you are sharing your genius you are getting the ultimate return by living the life you are meant to have.
So how can this change the world? Rather than yelling about what we can’t do anything about, we take responsibility for what we can and make our world better. We widen our circle of influence and help others do the same. We network… sharing our vision of a better world while supporting other people doing the same. This makes a difference. A positive one.
Our kids will see this. They will understand what entrepreneurship is. They will take the initiative to follow their genius and share it with the world because that is what they have seen us do. They will be willing to be innovative because that is what they have grown up with. They will learn tenacity… they will stick it out and make it work because they understand that is where the reward is. They will use their ingenuity to look at things differently and they will be a leader that gets things done. **
Are you an entrepreneur? How has it affected your life? Do you include your kids in your business? I’d love to hear what you think!
**Leadership, tenacity, innovative, ingenuity, initiative. These words aren’t mine. Oliver DeMille did an online class in 2013 that I participated in where he shared these in relationship with entrepreneurship. While it doesn’t look like this program is still available, he has others. Check them out HERE.
